A Thursday tramp at last

10 September - It seems a long time since I have been out on a Thursday tramp (overseas travel, winter illnesses, visiting granddaughters ...).  It was good to see my tramping friends again, and it was a big group - 21 of us.  Our destination was the Makairo track which lies east of Mangatainoka and Pahiatua.  The track is an old dirt road which is now just used by trampers and mountain bikers.  It follows high above the Makairo stream and lies within the Waewaepa Scenic Reserve.  The bush is regenerating.  It was a pleasantly graded walk of 15.5km (return) which took us just under five hours including lunch and other stops.
Morning tea stop

This saddle (centre) was our destination for a lunch stop
We hunkered down out of the wind for lunch.  The continuation of the track down to the east can be seen, but we did not go there.

Heading back out on the return journey
