Overnight tramp to Tutuwai hut

Wed 29 - Thursday 30 June: A winter overnight tramp to Tutuwai hut.  This was organised by the Wednesday tramping group.  There were 11 of us, ten women and one man!  For some of the women this was their first overnight tramping experience.  We walked into the bush from the entrance near Carterton  (Waiohine Gorge Road end) in the eastern Tararuas.  Along the way we passed Cone hut, built in 1946 - the second oldest hut in the Tararuas.  It was then a pleasant flat walk beside the Tauherenikau River to Tutuwai hut which we reached at 3pm, just as the forecast rain was starting.  We had a lot of overnight rain which meant that the side streams had risen, but we got across all of them without anyone falling in on the way out.  We retraced our steps back to the car park and enjoyed a coffee stop at Masterton during our drive home in the afternoon. A fun two days - good company and beautiful bush!

Outside Cone hut, heading towards Tutuwai hut

Inside Tutuwai hut.  There was too much rain for outside photos.  It was a comfortable, roomy hut for our group

Back at Cone hut on the way out - wearing raincoats this time.
Standing in front of the wood shed, not the hut!

A long swing bridge across the Waiohine River started and finished our tramp

Bob - the only male in our group - still smiling!
