Day 2: Puysegar Point lighthouse

14 August: Passengers on the Milford Wanderer cannot always land to visit Puysegar Point lighthouse.  Sometimes the ocean swells are too great for making safe landings from the tender boat.  We were lucky today to be able land and make the 2.5km walk to the lighthouse and back.  The weather was reasonably  pleasant, but we learned how severe the winds must be in bad conditions at the lighthouse. Visiting Puysegar Point lighthouse was one of the highlights of our Discovery Cruise.

The tender taking a load ashore.  With 32 passengers, two shuttles were needed, but it was always done quickly and efficiently so there was not much waiting about.

There was a small cluster of graves on shore here including this child's grave.  A sad commentary on hard times.  Richard, our wonderful Nature Guide.

Coastal scenery on the walk to the lighthouse

First view of the lighthouse (still very distant!)

Getting close now.
Remains of concrete foundations of past houses and buildings can be seen.

All the passengers made it!

Looking SW to the vast ocean, also very windy!

Waiting to return to the Milford Wanderer
Tramping boots off, gumboots on.
