27-29 April - I accompanied seven secondary schoolgirls for their Silver Duke of Edinburgh qualifying tramp in the western Tararuas. From the Ohau River entrance near Levin we had a long 11 1/2 hour day climbing up to Te Matawai hut, arriving in the dark. Fortunately the weather was perfect. We carried on to Waiopehu hut the next day (five hours), and out to the car park on day three (5 hours).

We passed the memorial to Ralph Wood who died here in a terrible storm in 1936
