2 June 2016 - Tunupo (1440m) is one of the higher peaks in the Ruahines that we can manage in a day tramp. Nineteen of us today and with recent cold weather we were expecting to reach the snowline. However, coming out above the bush we found there was a lot more snow than we expected. It was quite magical, and the sun came out as well. Seven of us climbed as high as we could to a lunch spot, but we were slowed by the thick snow and found it hard to find the track at times so did not even get close to the summit today. It was a cold but memorable tramp!
That's me in the bush - I carried an ice axe, but didn't need to use it
Out of the bush and into the snow
This was as high as we got - a quick lunch!
Heading back down
