Los Alamos NM

10 June - We were driving the Jemez Mountain Scenic Highway, very varied and spectacular scenery.

First geocache find on the trip "Soda Dam" - built up by a steady accumulation of calcium carbonate

Owen was keen to visit Los Alamos - the site of research and development of atomic bombs in WWII (The "Manhattan project").  We visited the Bradbury Science Museum which was very interesting.  Los Alamos is also at a very high altitude - 2,800m (higher than Ruapehu!).  We only drove higher than this one other time on this trip.

Life-size model of "Little Boy" atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, 6 August 1945

Life-size model of "Fat Man" - atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki 9 August 1945

Owen stands beside life-size statues of Robert J Oppenheimer and General Leslie Groves - leaders of the Manhattan Project
