The Durango & Silverton Railroad - Part 2

13 June  Our train reached its destination, the historic mining town of Silverton, at 12.30 pm.  We were now at an altitude of 2,836m, slightly higher than Ruapehu. What a huge uphill haul it had been for this steam engine, a climb of 850m in three hours 45 minutes.  We were given two hours in Silverton to have lunch and look around (and find some geocaches).  It was like stepping into the wild west with its wide dirt roads and colourful wooden facades.  Visiting this town was a real highlight!

The historic mining town of Silverton, 2,836m, nestled in an old volcanic crater surrounded by snowy peaks, even in summer!  At one time four different narrow gauge railroads served this town, so rich were the takings.

Taking a break after the big climb

Wide, dirt streets!

Even the dandelions were extra large and colourful

Some geocaching fun, this geocache was called "Too easy" ...

and it was!
