12 June Our morning drive took us through the Jicarilla Apache Indian Reservation - a large expanse of grass, sagebrush and dotted trees. There were fences, but no sign of stock - a very empty landscape, noticeably greener than other parts of the state.
There were now many signs of oil and gas drilling
| On through Carson National Forest - steeper terrain now, rocks and forest. |
| A lunch stop at Navajo Dam |
Houseboats on the lake

| Aztec Ruins National Monument - confusing, actually nothing to do with Aztec Indians, but located in the city of Aztec. Ancestral Pueblo people developed this settlement between 1000 and 1200 AD The round building on the right is a restored kiva, used for communal events, and is largely underground. Owen took this panorama photo. |

| Mind your head! People were small then. |
