It was a steady climb from Crooked Spur hut up through open tussock country

We arrived at Stone hut and took a break. Kevin boiled a billy for some welcome hot drinks, even though it was a hot day.
It was a long, hot trek on to Royal hut. We arrived at 5pm. Here we met a friendly couple,Miriam and Peter, who are walking Te Araroa but choosing to do the trail with many diversions. They are living a self-sufficient lifestyle in the hills . A very interesting couple to meet!
