Bike Ride - The Iron Ore Heritage Trail

1 July - We drove through the towns of Marquette, Negaunee and Ishpeming (great names!) to start a ride along the Iron Ore Heritage Trail with Bonnie.  It was a pleasant, easy, downhill ride of about 30 miles with lots of iron ore mining history along the way back to Marquette.  We enjoyed the solid brick and historic architecture of Marquette - it was a city with a lot of character.

Loved the iron ore mile markers!

Riding into Marquette at the end of our trail we wondered what this was.  It is an iron ore dock.  Ships would anchor alongside and iron ore would be loaded from the top.  This ore dock is no longer working.

This ore dock, also at Marquette is working.  We saw trains carrying coal or iron ore on the top, but no ships today.

After our ride we met up with Rich at this pub.  Rich is the son of Carol and Dick staying at Big Bay.  Rich is a Doctor here at Marquette.

Rich (right) with John, a good friend of his who we happened to meet outdoors at Marquette.  In the evening we enjoyed an excellent New Orlean's style dinner with Rich and Bonnie before heading back to our house at Big Bay.
