Fourth of July - Lighthouses and fireworks

4 July - Bonnie drove us on from Sault Ste Marie, keeping near near the shore of Lake Superior and heading north.  Our first stop was this historic wooden building,  Point Iroquois Light Station.  It was foggy over the lake behind and we could hear foghorns.

Then on to Whitefish Point and Shipwreck Museum.  This interesting museum covered the many shipwrecks that have happened in Lake Superior, often caused by fog, collisions, or huge storms.  The most recent, and mysterious, wreck was the SS Edmund Fitzgerald in 1975.

There were several buildings to look through, this was the Lightkeepers Quarters

Our last stop on today's drive was to view the Tahquamenon Falls.  It was late afternoon by this time but there were still crowds of people enjoying this very pleasant State Park setting, and these beautiful falls.  The coffee colours are caused by tannins in the water, and the foamy appearance is due to the softness of the water plus the action of decaying organic matter containing lignin proteins which whip up like egg white protein in the turbulence of the falls.

Back at Munising we had dinner and later took an evening boat trip out onto Lake Superior to watch the Fourth of July fireworks.  We sailed at 10.30 pm - only just getting dark.  The fireworks started at 11 pm and continued until almost 11.30 pm, and very artistic too.  It was very special to be present at this Fourth of July celebration, with big crowds on boats and much greater crowds along the shore line.

Even though it was very calm, we found that it wasn't easy to photograph fireworks from a boat, but here are a couple of Owen's best.
