Farewell Upper Peninsula

5 July - It was time to leave the Upper Peninsula - what an interesting and diverse region it has been to explore.  After our late night watching the fireworks we needed an early start (7 am) to drive to the house we would be staying in further south.  We had got to know the 25 mile "Seney straight" in our travels, a dead straight four lane highway through forest.  Leaving Munising, Bonnie drove us along the this straight for the sixth and last time!  It was a five hour highway drive to Duck Lake with minimal stops - well done Bonnie!

We saw these beautiful Sandhill cranes a few times in the Upper Peninsula.  This was the best look at them we had, right beside the highway at the entrance to the Seney National Wildlife Reserve.

Back to cross the Mackinac Bridge again

The viewpoint overlooking Lake Michigan and the MackinacBridge was very pleasantly landscaped.

Our last accommodation on our trip with Bonnie was house-sitting she had arranged at Duck Lake.  Here we were very close to Interlochen Center for the Arts.  This Center offers summer school programmes in music, arts and drama for both young people and adults.  Hundreds of concerts and events are held over the summer.  The centre has a large number of buildings and auditoriums set in a park like setting.
Bonnie had bought tickets for us all to go to an evening concert - the World Youth Symphony Orchestra playing music by Aaron Copeland, Silvestra Revueltas and George Gershwin - an excellent concert!

The auditorium was very large, roofed over with open-air walls

The World Youth Orchestra in action.  There is a huge range of concerts over the summer, two evenings later Bonnie and I  saw the Doobie Brothers performing here.
